Tips for moving!

This is a great opportunity to get rid of clutter. Go through your garage, attic, storeage areas, and make hard decisions on what you no longer use. Have a garage sale to get rid of old furniture, household goods, sports equipment, etc a month or two before you move. Not only will this get rid of infrequently used items, it will free up space so you will be able to see what else you have to pack/move. Deciding not to take infrequently used items with you also saves on moving costs.

Selling tips

Divorce yourself from your house the moment you decide to sell. Seriously. It is no longer your home, it is a piece of property you are selling. This is business, not personal. Look at your house with fresh eyes. Would YOU buy this house as it looks now at the price you hope to receive? No? Well then get cracking!

Tips for Moving

If you are moving yourself, head to your local liquor, or paint shop for empty boxes. Check your local supermarket or fruit shop also for moving boxes.
If you are packing yourself, use bubble wrap (you can buy this at a packing or office supply store) or blank newsprint (to prevent black ink smudges of printed newspaper) dirtying your things, use packing peanuts for breakables. Use your towels to pack away larger breakables, and use your cushions and place them between furniture. Get a few moving blankets and place them over your furniture to prevent furniture dings.

Selling tips

Curb appeal matters. You don’t have to repaint your house or replant the gardens, but make sure the lawn is mowed, the weeds are pulled, light bulbs all work, and any chipped paint has been touched up. If you will be living at the house while it is on the market, flowers in the garden or in pots by the door can add a wonderful, lively pop of colour.

Selling tips

Paint is your friend. A fresh coat of paint in a builder’s beige or white can freshen up a room and provide the biggest bang for the staging-buck. Not every room needs to be painted if you don’t have time – just paint the main rooms people will walk into, the ones immediately seen. I once sold a house with raspberry paint in one bedroom, and orange paint in another bedroom. It didn’t matter. By the time the couple got upstairs, they were already in love with the downstairs, and painting the upstairs didn't concern them. These clients could see past the paint, however some buyers will not. A good first impression can sell your home.

Tips for moving

If you have removalist, designate a “do not pack” room, and tape signs to the closed door stating “do not pack”. In that room store medicines, toiletries, jewellery, electronics , food, personal papers, towels and bed linens, as well as a suitcase full of clothing. Move these items yourself. Set up a second suitcase or box with “first day” items such as toilet paper, light-bulbs, a set of towels for each family member, soap and garbage bags.
