Knowing the road rules prior to the move

Not only are roads completely different in each state (do read up on the rules prior) but people are too. Moving to Sydney? People have limited to no time for your conversations. In Melbourne, not giving way to pedestrians even though you’re not required to is considered a white-collar crime. And in Brisbane, if you don’t know a random stranger’s life story at the end of a bus trip, are you actually even in Brissy?

Have an emergancy survival pack on standby

Removalists may not arrive at the property at the same time you do. In many circumstances they could be a day or so behind if you are moving interstate. This means you’re in a big empty house with nothing but excitement to keep you company. You’ll need a survival guide: That’s a blow-up mattress, a picnic set so you can eat and drink, and bare essential clothing and toiletries. And most importantly, a laptop and wine!

Moving with kids?

No matter how experienced or savvy  you are with relocation, every move causes challenges. Moving can be especially hard for kids with changes in neighborhoods and schools, along with saying good bye to friends. But with a little advanced preparation, the move can go more smoothly for the whole family. Click here to check out these six tips to help you plan your move with kids.

Tips for moving

Unpack a box completely, and put everything away. If the movers unpack for you, they do just that… unpack and leave it in the middle of the room. They do not put anything a way. They will, however, take away all the boxes and wrappings. To get rid of excess boxes, freecycle them. Just leave them on the curb for the interested party.

Tips for Moving

Schedule your moving truck or removalist in advance. Avoid peak season if possible as that time of year will add to costs, and if you are using a mover, may delay the arrival of your truck. At the same time, schedule your utility shut-offs and turn-ons.

Tips for moving

Label every single last box with black permanent marker … kitchen (kitchen dishes 1/30, kitchen silverware 2/30, kitchen gadgets 3/30, etc), bathroom, Sonny-boy’s bedroom. If you have movers packing for you, follow them around and label better than they do (kid A’s room, Kid B’s summer clothing). Label essential kitchen items as “kitchen essentials box 1/30″ so you aren’t digging through 30 boxes to make a pot of coffee. Have those boxes loaded last on the truck so they are first off. Keep a master list of all boxes, and how many per room (kitchen 30 boxes, kid’s room A 15 boxes, etc).

Tips for moving

Make certain your beds are the last pieces of furniture packed on the removalist truck. They will be the first off, and immediately you can set them up. Put on bed linens and pillows as soon as possible after set-up. At the end of a long moving day, it is nice to have the beds ready and waiting!

Prior to moving day put all the things you will for the first night in your new home in a box. That way you will not be searching through a maze of boxes for cups, tea etc.....

As soon as you walk into your new house, unpack your towels, toilet paper and bathroom toiletries, and deposit those suitcases full of clothing in each room.

Tips for moving!

This is a great opportunity to get rid of clutter. Go through your garage, attic, storeage areas, and make hard decisions on what you no longer use. Have a garage sale to get rid of old furniture, household goods, sports equipment, etc a month or two before you move. Not only will this get rid of infrequently used items, it will free up space so you will be able to see what else you have to pack/move. Deciding not to take infrequently used items with you also saves on moving costs.

Tips for Moving

If you are moving yourself, head to your local liquor, or paint shop for empty boxes. Check your local supermarket or fruit shop also for moving boxes.
If you are packing yourself, use bubble wrap (you can buy this at a packing or office supply store) or blank newsprint (to prevent black ink smudges of printed newspaper) dirtying your things, use packing peanuts for breakables. Use your towels to pack away larger breakables, and use your cushions and place them between furniture. Get a few moving blankets and place them over your furniture to prevent furniture dings.

Selling tips

Paint is your friend. A fresh coat of paint in a builder’s beige or white can freshen up a room and provide the biggest bang for the staging-buck. Not every room needs to be painted if you don’t have time – just paint the main rooms people will walk into, the ones immediately seen. I once sold a house with raspberry paint in one bedroom, and orange paint in another bedroom. It didn’t matter. By the time the couple got upstairs, they were already in love with the downstairs, and painting the upstairs didn't concern them. These clients could see past the paint, however some buyers will not. A good first impression can sell your home.

Tips for moving

If you have removalist, designate a “do not pack” room, and tape signs to the closed door stating “do not pack”. In that room store medicines, toiletries, jewellery, electronics , food, personal papers, towels and bed linens, as well as a suitcase full of clothing. Move these items yourself. Set up a second suitcase or box with “first day” items such as toilet paper, light-bulbs, a set of towels for each family member, soap and garbage bags.
